The Ortega Regime Must Be Stopped NOW

The Ortega Regime has been operating a dictatorship for several months through the detainment of political opponents and protestors in Nicaragua.

Without proper accountability, the situation will only get uglier as Ortega intends to win the November 7th presidential elections by sidelining all other candidates from the race.

Berenice Quezada was one of those candidates.

She was running for vice president and had a promising campaign platform founded upon promoting human rights and public liberties.

Recently she was charged with ‘inciting terrorism’ for registering as an anti-government candidate and will remain restrained under house arrest until her pending trial date.

The logic behind this detainment is beyond idiotic. It’s a pathetic, last-ditch effort to hold onto power.

Sadly, even if she were to finish the trial and come out innocent, she still wouldn’t be able to continue her campaign.

Quezada isn’t alone as 7 other political contenders had already been arrested prior to her detainment.

Citizens have been inciting riots and raising awareness about these human rights violations through movements such as #Nicaragua. Ortega’s Administration has been cracking down on these movements with the same flawed line of reasoning. Apparently, foreign powers are inciting a coup disguised as human-rights based protests.

???

I’m not sure which foreign powers he is referring to but the E.U., the U.N., and the U.S. have imposed sanctions and made statements admonishing his actions.

The U.S. has also enforced visa restrictions on 100 members and affiliates of the Ortega Administration as anti-democratic corruption is obviously in direct violation with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

Ortega is supposed to be representing Nicaragua as an OAS member state through the promotion of “transparent, free, and fair elections.”

This isn’t even ironic. This is calculated injustice!

Global democratic institutions need to act now. Who knows what will happen on November 7th if Ortega isn’t held accountable now. I don’t want to find out and neither should you.

  1. Ikenna, welcome to the world beyond economics- this is your first non-economic, no NFTs, no cryptocurrency and you picked quite an overlooked but very important issue. Ortega has now arrested over 30 political opponents and is looking to extend his constitutional powers (an extended term). You wrote, "operating a dictatorship for several months"; the truth is, many of his political opponents will argue, is that his dictatorial methods have been in place for years (this election has heightened an awareness of these political abuses).
