Addressing the Concerns and Needs of the Survivors of Genocides

While the Iraqi government has pledged to ensure justice for Yazidi women and other ethnographic-religious survivors of the ISIL terrorist group, many are unsatisfied with their response and demand greater responsiveness to the severity of the situation. For starters, people want the government to implement statutes outlining that the Iraqi government's next steps will be survivor centered. Second, there must be definitive budget allocations and systems in place to guarantee reparations and financial support for these survivors.

I too find it necessary that the Iraqi government meets these demands to help those who were harmed by sexual violence, genocide, and terrorism seven years ago. I also think that, with the UN’s backing, the paradigm adopted by the Iraqi government will serve as a framework for addressing such atrocities in the future.

  1. What an interesting topic- and a very challenging one at that. I read a book a while back about the unimaginable experience of a Yazidi woman (Nadia Murad: Last Girl) during life under ISIL. What you touch on is real... and difficult to achieve. That is not at all meant to dismiss the quest for justice- this justice is a must going forward. Ikenna, one of the challenges of being a bright and thoughtful student is that readers come to expect your thoroughness which so often punctuates your work. This is a short blog; what are the challenges in pursuing justice, what are the specific criticisms of the Iraqi govt, what efforts (if any) have been established to start the wheels of justice turning, who is representing these women, what is being done to provide healing for these women? What do you think needs to be done?
